Experience the Excitement of Fall in Southwest Michigan
all in Southwest Michigan is so much more than leaf-peeping views and cozy fireplaces (although those are two of our favorites). Here, fall is the season of great food, freshly harvested from nearby, local farms and farmers; the season of exploring Southwest Michigan’s many vineyards and wineries; the season of jazz music sounds and intimate evenings; the season of getting lost in labyrinthine mazes of corn.
One of the best qualities of the region is the high quality of homegrown food, ingredients, and flavors handcrafted by our farmers. From apple cider to artisanal cheeses, the scenic rural landscape around Saugatuck will undoubtedly please any palette. Head to Crane Orchards in Fennville for apple picking of 17 different varieties and then tackle the seasonal 20-acre corn maze. Before you go, be sure to try an apple cider doughnut. Continue your apple-flavored excursion with a visit to Virtue Cider’s tasting room and bottle shop to try the latest offerings made from Michigan-grown heirloom apples. The freshly-grown flavors of the fall harvest season, all from local Michigan farms, have never been so sweet.
Another reason to visit Saugatuck and Douglas in the fall is, of course, for Halloween. It’s one of our favorite holidays around here, with several events taking place near the end of October to celebrate all things spooky. On October 26th, bring your costume and line up in front of Beery Field before proceeding down the parade route, led by the parade mascot, the Giant Pumpkin King. This adults-only parade takes place at 10 PM and is just as much fun to watch as it is to participate. Borrowed Time Bar and Restaurant will be on location serving food and drinks. Visit the Saugatuck website for more information on the Douglas Halloween Parade.
