Blue Coast Artists Driving Tour
Travel the scenic Blue Star Highway and back roads that connect South Haven and Saugatuck if you’re interested in discovering one of the state’s hidden (but one of its most treasured) gems. The artistic communities located in these quaint coastal towns make up the Blue Coast Artists Driving Tour, a behind-the-scenes look into the studios of some of the most talented working artisans in the region. Along the way, you’ll also find world-class wineries, agritourism farms, wildlife habitats, and breathtaking views of Lake Michigan.
Fennville is one of Michigan’s most charming small towns. With a variety of wineries, antiques, and studio/galleries, Fennville has something for everyone. You’ll also find outdoor adventuring opportunities on the Heritage Trail and U-pick orchards and markets. One of the best spots to hit is Blue Roan Studio. You’ll find the 1881 schoolhouse on a scenic back road. Inside, working artist Jessica Bohus uses a blowtorch to craft glass beads, incorporating them into silver jewelry and magnificent sculptures including blown glass garden figures. Nearby, stop in at Fenn Valley Vineyards for a taste testing of some delicious, award-winning wines and a tour of the 230-acre farm estate. Tastings are free and the estate also includes a gift shop.
Down the road is Khnemu Studio, owned and operated by artist Dawn Soltysiak. The studio offers workshops and a gallery of hand-made contemporary ceramics and fine art. The location is beautiful, too, so enjoy the ambiance of the 1890s farm estate with animals including peacocks, ducks, and chickens. Khnemu is unique for this quality, connecting the artist, through the work of Dawn both in her studio and on her farm, to the land.
There are so many great options on your Blue Coast Artists Driving Tour. It may take a couple of days to get to them all. Stay longer or take your pick from Blue Coast Artists Driving Tour guide.
