Antiques in Allegan County, Michigan
Hunting season just started for Michigan’s antique aficionados and the state famous for its summers has just thrown open its doors for springtime. Michigan’s largest antique show, Allegan Antiques, hosts more than 400 exhibitors at the Allegan County Fairgrounds on the last Sunday of the month, from April through September. It’s only a thirty minute drive from our bed and breakfast, and it’s worth the trip! Find shabby chic, rustic, primitive, and dozens of other antique, vintage, and repurposed décor styles and collectibles here as well as some classic American flea market food like French fries, grilled chicken, fish and chips, and caramel apples.
New buildings, picnic areas covered in the gentle shade of large oak and walnut trees, indoor vendors, and an immensely diverse selection of china, furniture, jewelry, glass, and more all make the Allegan Antiques Show one of the best in the Great Lakes region, and possibly the nation. With the rising popularity of industrial, primitive, and shabby chic styles of interior decorating, Allegan Antiques has become a hot spot for those designers and fans.
Get there early, too! These events are all about the early bird (Allegan Antiques opens at 8AM) and you won’t want to miss that special treasure you can use as a gift or keep for yourself. Who knows? It might be exactly what you’re looking for. Try making a list of things you need around the house and find a vintage or genuine antique replacement at a flea market. Not only is it worth more, but these items last longer, constructed in a period of time where things were built to last; it’s why they’re still for sale! If you prefer an open mind and go-with-the-flow kind of approach, then tackle Allegan Antiques with some cash in hand and an eye for those unique pieces that can really grab your (and your guests’ at home) attention.
For me, it’s the knickknacks that find a way to burrow themselves into my heart. The small hummingbird carving that reminds me of my mother, or the Native American flag bearing the geometric shape of a butterfly as a symbol for eternal life. Whatever it is for you, you’ll find it at the Allegan Antiques Show.
Visit the Allegan Antiques Show’s website for more information. Admission is only $4, and the show runs 8AM-4PM on the last Sunday of every month from April to September.
